Success is a probability. We have seen the intrinsic of what success is .If you haven’t read it, I would highly recommend you to first read it before proceeding. You can read it here. The Philosophy of success.
Without any further ado, here are the steps
- Identify what success is for you.
- Identify the shortest path
- Break your goal into chunks
- Keep branching the chunks further
- Master each and every chunk one by one
I really don’t know how to go about this. Lets see I’ll try to explain each of the steps through my real life example. If you feel the article is too boring and wordy, just go ahead and only read the example I have given for each steps. It is in Bold and Italic font.
These steps can also applied to other aspects of life like Health, Relationship etc.
1. Identify what is success for you in that particular field.
This is an important step. According to the goals you set here, the below steps follows. You have to CLEARLY identify
what success means to you. It can be anything as long as you feel committed to achieve it. For an aspiring actor, it might
be to become a great actor, or to be rich, or to be popular etc. If he focuses on being an extra-ordinary actor, he is bound to be great, rich and popular. Focus on becoming extraordinary in the work you do, rest everything follows.
EXAMPLE: Here in my case I wanted to be a great Table Tennis Player. I identified the goal here which was to become great at playing Table Tennis.
2.Create a path , based on your talents ,strengths and experiences.
You are here , Success is there. To reach from here to there you need a path. After having identified the goal, you have to create a path to reach there.
Everyone on this planet is unique; so are their traits, characteristics, situations, strengths, weaknesses etc.
Your characteristics/uniqueness is shaped according to the situations through which you have been brought up since birth. You can call them as your experiences. These experiences shape up your thinking. Everyone has unique experiences and so thinking differs.
There is a shortest way to achieve success in anything. It is also the best strategy to achieve success. This strategy is different for every individuals. What this strategy depends on is the individuals talents, weakness, strengths etc. Only you can define your own shortest path or best strategy. If you follow someone else’s path , you may be successful or may be not. Depends on how similar both your life’s experiences were. Depends on how similar yourtalents, weakness, strengths, opportunities are.
How do you find the best possible strategy/path?
What you can do is to , try to follow different experts of that field as in what, why and how they did. Try and take everything that matches to your experiences and build it up,integrate everything to make it your own path. Now you have your own customized path. Remember that this process is never ending , you have to keep building yourself up.
EXAMPLE: For finding a best path, I did a lot of research. First of all, I identified the elements of what it took to be a great TT player. I tried a firsthand experience on the sport. I searched on internet, watched videos, observed my seniors who were expert in TT etc. Broadly, I could identify some elements like my Ability, Current standards, Positioning, Timing, Shots,Technique and so on and so forth. Here my path which identified was to first observe and learn basics from my immediate batch mates who were just above my level.
Gradually I started learning basics from free online tutorials. It is important to note that you learn from the experts for best results.
3.Break your Goal into chunks.
Now that you have Set goals and identified the path, you have to start working towards it. Before that there is one more thing which is needed to be done. You have to branch your goals into smaller and smaller chunks.
EXAMPLE: While learning I could branch my goals. There were just too many goals to branch things I identified above .
Basic level:- Basic postures, Positioning, Basic shots
Intermediate:- Posture , Placing, Timing, Shots
Advanced Intermediate:- Advanced techniques, Positioning , Styles , science of ball movements etc
Expert Level:- Perfect positioning, Advanced Techniques, Body movements , Science of every movement
Goes On and On…………..( This was my calculation . In reality there are much more levels than these.)
4.Further keep breaking each chunks further until you arrive at the smallest chunk.
Go on branching out your goals till it seem small enough and easy to achieve. It is putting pieces of puzzle. You identify the pieces and now you put them together.
EXAMPLE: Breaking the chunks to even smaller further branches. Understanding, learning and applying each aspects. Here is the breakdown.
Basic Postures:- Hand movement, Elbow movement, Arms, Hips, Legs, Start and end position, etc
Positioning:- Hand-eye coordination , Legs to Hands coordination, Footwork etc
Placing:- Basic Placing , Placing shots accuracy ,Placing Strategy ,Tactics
Shots:- Forehand, Backhand, Drives, Chops, Tactics and Strategic techniques
TT tools:- TT tables, Rules, TT balls, Rackets etc
so on and so forth the list continues………
5. Master each small chunks. Go on learning and mastering small chunks.
Take any small chunk. Learn everything you need to master it.You cannot be perfect at anything but strive to be a master/expert.
EXAMPLE: I started with the basics and went smaller. I started with basic positioning and Shot selections. I learnt the perfect backhand, forehand techniques, smashes etc.As proceeded to learn more depth , I could already notice I was Winning Games and learning more from my loses.
6. After having mastered small chunks , integrate them into bigger ones.
Here is the part where you have the smallest pieces of the puzzles. Now you will have to integrate them into larger ones. How you integrate is you apply things you lerant. Once to learn to fit small goals , it gradually becomes bigger.
EXAMPLE: Here , after getting acquainted with basics I dived deeper into each .
In shots I learnt Forehand drive, forehand smashes, Backhand drive, backhand smash, chops, serves etc .
I learned to position myself better with each shots. I got better grip and eventually integrated all of them with ease. The more I learned, applied and integrated the more I observed winning games with ease.
7. Keep on integrating until you reach the goal.
Keep on integrating until you reach the final goal. As you keep on integrating and learning , you will automatically develop new skills which wouldn’t have been intentional on your part but it just happens. This makes you a better individual every time you learn and apply something.
EXAMPLE: After each aspects learnt, I tried to level up. Practice is the key here. Applying each aspects was tough task initially but as I practiced more, I could easily apply. Eventually I was at a stage where I was winning 90% of my games. Important thing to note here is that I was leveling up faster than my opponents and hence I won majority games(in this instance). But in real life you never know who is at what level, you have to keep on learning and leveling up till you reach your goal.
P.S: I used this technique when I first tried to learn Table Tennis in early 2014 . That would be 1st year and 2nd semester of my college. Prior to this I had little to no knowledge about the sport. I applied these steps. By the time next year in 2015 , I was in the college Table Tennis team (Yay! No Boasting though). I only intended to demonstrate how powerful this method has worked for me. If there is only 1 thing you need to take from this it is this.
KEEP ON LEARNING AND YOU WILL EVENTUALLY BE SUCCESSFUL .
