Success is a term which we are familiar with. Everyone wants success but only a few people are able to crack the success code. What is success and how can one achieve success in anything. What makes people successful. What is the difference between people who achieve success and those who don’t.
What is success?
Success is a perspective. The definition of success changes over time. Different people have different notions on what success is. In earlier times, getting a degree or a high paying job was termed success. Nowadays, maybe getting name and fame, having a well settled life are some of the notions.
You have been successful countless times before, its just that you don’t acknowledge them as success. Everyone have at some point tasted success in their lives.
Imagine as a child , having learnt to walk was a success for you, doing things on your own was a success for you. If you just look back on your life and see ; you will know you ARE already successful at so many things.
As you achieve success , for you its definition changes. For instance, having learnt to walk now you would want to run, getting more marks in exam, making more money so on and so forth.
What are these ? It is nothing but your own desires and wants. Achieving your desires and wants can be called success. Desires are endless and achieving your desires will have no end to it. All in all, we can say that success is a never ending journey. It is not a destination where you reach, it is a journey like life which you must enjoy. You can never achieve all your desires. If you do ,either you are lying to yourself or you have made absolute peace with yourself and completely accepted one-selves.
Intrinsic elements of being successful
There are hundreds and thousands of factors which plays different roles in getting success. Only a few of these factors are inherently in our control. This implies that achieving success is not in our control. Having said that, we can conclusively say that success is a probability. You can never ever guarantee 100% success beforehand.
What Determines Success?
As had been said earlier, there are thousands of factors which plays role in determining whether a person gets success or not. Lets say there are n factors on which success depends. You have control over m factors where n>> m.
Now, the probability that you will achieve success is :
1/n < 2/n < 3/n <……< m/n…..and beyond.
where m= number of aspects in achieving success you master ( m=0 to m<n ). Aspects are nothing but ,you can say skills and tools you develop for a particular work.
Now, as you can see from above, the more aspects you master which you have control over , the more likely and more probable you are in achieving success. Absolutely simple.
If you want to become a Great filmmaker. Here the aspects/factors/tools/skills will be:
1. you need to know about films.
2. you need various film-making tools
3. you need to know script writing
4. understand lighting
5 understanding various lighting tools
7. videography, cinematography
8.cameras and shots, different types of shots, when to apply which shot
9.editing, voicing, audio
10.soft skills,communication etc
just to name a few. Each of them is an ocean in itself. As you learn more, the depth increases.
A Small Case Study
Lets say for an example:
Two friends decided to become filmmakers. Each one has his/her own unique set of qualities.
The first friend went on to learn 4 aspects of filming and the second friend learnt 6 aspects. Whom do you think is going to be more successful. I heard you say the second one right! Second one has an edge.
probability of first friend:
m= no. of aspects in his control= 4
total no. of factors = n
hence probability: 4/n. Right!
probability of second friend:
m=no. of aspects = 6
total no. of factors = n
hence probability: 6/n. OK
It is clear from the data that , the second friend is more probable to be a great filmmaker . Isn’t it? Yes and No. Well this isn’t the whole story. Yes, on paper , 2nd friend is probable of becoming great filmmaker. But on paper and real life situations are totally different. In real life, the first friend has an equal chance of becoming a great filmmaker too.
This depends on how much each individual has the level of mastery over. 4 aspects/skills in depth mastery -Vs – 6 aspects/skills surface level mastery. There are loads of other factors too which aren’t in our hands;not getting suitable audience,Hits and Flops, likability etc.
Now,consider a person who has 20 aspects mastered, 50 aspects mastered, 100 aspects mastered. Is he probable of getting success? Definitely yes. What about the factors not in control, the likability, the audience, hits or flops. Maybe he may not get success all the time but he is 100 times more successful than the filmmakers who know 10 aspects. He is bound to be successful and make more super hit films by focusing more on his skills and mastering them than worrying about things he can’t control. The probability of him being a great filmmaker increases as he develops himself more.
20/n < 50/n < 100/n……..so on .
Don’t restrict the example to your career only. You can apply it on your professional and personal lives, to health, relationships etc.
Successful vs Unsuccessful : The Difference
So, few people who achieved success compared to others had odds in their favor. The probability of getting success for them was higher. Having odds in your favor is not by chance, but by choice. It is your choice that can increase or decrease the odds. And what is that choice?
It is the choice to work. The people who achieved success in any field choose to focus on what they have control over and work on it regardless of all the factors that weren’t under control. In doing so and mastering what they had control over , they inadvertently developed an edge over others. This edge created more odds to be in their favor. The odds increases with each and every failure you come across.
Lastly, does it guarantee that even after mastering the skills ,you’ll be successful.
Sadly, No. There is no 100% guarantee that you would succeed. The probability of getting success increases doesn’t necessarily mean you wont fail. You will fail and failure is also a probability. If your probability of getting success is 3/4 also means 1/4 probability you can fail. But here is another interesting thing to note. From each and every failure you learn , you gain an edge over the others. The odds of success increases with each failures. The most successful of the people were the people who had the most failures.
Let me quote that famous dialogue from the Bollywood movie ” 3 IDIOTS”
“Bachcha kabil bano, kabil … kamyabi toh saali jhak maarke peeche bhagegi.”
Translation: ” Child, Strive to be deserving and success will undoubtedly follow”. You deserve when you excel. So:
“Strive for excellence and success will immediately follow”
